GBL 236 INDIA: SCIENCE, EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT
This Winter Term service-learning study abroad course to Kerala, India, includes an intense service-learning project. Elon students will monitor activities related to hands-on science exhibits in a traveling science center. The target audience for the traveling science center are middle school children. The service-learning project will be done in collaboration with local high school students. The importance of education to development will be examined in detail. Students will also explore local culture, history, political history and structures, effects of tourism, and the role of NGO's in the developing world. The south Indian state of Kerala borders the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats mountains. In spite of its relative poverty and a high population density, Kerala is a model for social development. High literacy rate, long life expectancy, low birth rate, and a high Human Development Index are attributed to a complex set of factors to be explored in the course.
