COR 3970 Would You Rather? Sickness and Health in the U.S. and the U.K.
This course compares the health care systems of the United States and the United Kingdom, specifically England. The course is integrative and interdisciplinary pulling from sociology, psychology, history, public health, and economics, and will be of interest to students interested in health and wellness broadly. This course will examine the concepts of health and illness through disciplinary theories and perspectives and consider the histories and evolutions of the health care systems of each country within social, cultural, historical, and political context. Specific attention will be paid to issues of equity and accessibility within health care systems. Within this course, we will examine the ways in which health and wellness and illness are conceptualized in each region, expectations for the roles of patient and provider within those health care systems, what the systems offer patients, providers, and communities, and expectations of personal and social responsibility for health and wellness.
