EDU4150 Educational Assessment

Teacher candidates in this course examine the multiple purposes and uses of educational assessments. Emphasis is placed on classroom assessment, monitoring progress and process, evaluating products and performances, and constructing reliable measures of student learning. Consideration is also given to the interpretation and communication of individual, aggregated, and school-level assessment results. Cross-cutting themes for the course include equity in assessment and data literacy.

Course Outcomes

  1. Teacher candidates will understand the various types and multiple purposes of assessments in middle and secondary education
  2. Teacher candidates will design, adapt, or select appropriate formative and summative assessments to address specific learning goals, including accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities and language learning needs
  3. Teacher candidates will identify the personal, social, cultural, and political implications of designing, using, and interpreting educational assessments
  4. Teacher candidates will identify inequities and biases in educational assessments
  5. Teacher candidates will analyze assessment data to identify learning needs and draw conclusions about K-12 students’ progress toward learning objectives
  6. Teacher candidates will provide K-12 students with meaningful feedback and support those students to respond to that feedback in ways that helps them deepen their learning
  7. Teacher candidates will know the School Improvement Plan process and analyze School Improvement Plans
