EDU4440 Literacy Special Education Methods
Teacher candidates will learn how to use High Leverage Practices (HLP) in Special Education in the context of explicit, systematic, and intensive reading instruction for students with reading difficulties who receive services in a Resource Room or inclusive general education setting.
Prerequisite
EDU 3420; EDU 3540; EDU 4040 for Elementary Education & Special Education majors; admission to teacher education; student teaching application or permission from Director of Teacher Education. Middle Grades & Special Education majors should apply to the department chair for a waiver of the EDU 4040 prerequisite.

Course Outcomes
- Students will learn how to:
- prevent reading difficulties - - use research to determine effective reading instruction for students with disabilities
- - plan and carry out explicit, systematic, and intensive reading instruction for students with learning difficulties
- - conduct informal assessment of reading skills in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension
- - write goals and objectives for reading skills based on data
- - use curriculum-based measurement as a basis for planning, monitoring and modifying instruction
- - monitor reading progress
- - support transfer of reading skills to the general education classroom and other environments
