EDU4510 Teaching Diverse Learners

This course is designed to prepare teachers and those interested in education to work effectively in today’s inclusive classrooms. The course is divided into three sections: Theoretical foundations for teaching diverse learners, critical self-reflection, and types of diversities. Types of diversities will be the central focus of the course and will include five major topics: 1) Psychosocial Diversity- mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence; 2) racial, cultural and ethnic diversity and the role of multicultural education; 3) linguistic diversity and the needs of students for whom English is a second language; 4) socio-economic diversity and the effects of poverty on learning; and 5) other diversities, such as religion and gender.

Course Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to demonstrate an awareness of competencies related to teaching students from culturally diverse backgrounds based on ethnicity (race, language, national origin, and religion), socioeconomic class, gender, age, etc. and demonstrate an awareness of competencies related to teaching students with learning, physical, behavioral, and emotional disabilities
  2. Students will be able to describe their expectations regarding culturally diverse and exceptional needs students
  3. Students will be able to describe the legal, historical, and philosophical bases for educating culturally diverse and exceptional needs students
  4. Students will be able to demonstrate a working familiarity with terminology related to teaching students with exceptional needs in the regular classroom
  5. Students will be able to identify several learning strategies that can be used to accommodate culturally diverse and exceptional needs students
  6. Students will be able to identify national, state, and local resources available to assist them in planning and implementing instruction for culturally diverse and exceptional needs students
  7. Students will be able to describe a collaborative model for working with culturally diverse and exceptional needs students and their parents/caregivers
