EDU4230 Methods and Materials for Teaching English Language Arts
In EDU 4230, students learn how to investigate, evaluate and select content, methods and materials used in organizing and teaching English language arts in the elementary classroom including second language learners and those with exceptionalities. They design and implement differentiated lessons based on state standards and develop technology-enhanced, integrated learning units balancing readiness factors, vocabulary development, word identification, comprehension strategies, fluency and motivation for reading and writing in elementary school. A concurrent internship offers opportunities to apply concepts and skills.

Course Outcomes

speaking and listening) and when applicable, integrate into practice. - Students will be able to critically reflect on instructional decisions and feedback, adapting practice based on students'
contributions, student data, and research. - Students will develop an awareness of the NCICU Literacy Competencies for the Science of Reading (2023) (Oral Reading
Fluency, Vocabulary, Academic Language, and Comprehension) and how they are applicable within
elementary English Language Arts instruction.
