EDU4260 Methods and Materials for Teaching Social Studies

This course examines the social studies teaching practices and learning. Students learn how to investigate, evaluate, and select content, methods, and materials used to teach social studies: geography, history, economics, civics/government, and culture/society. Critical thinking, curricular integration, differentiation, and incorporation of technology is emphasized in the design and implementation of lessons consistent with state and national standards, reflecting best practices in research and literature for this field. A concurrent internship offers opportunities to apply concepts and skills.

Course Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to recognize, plan for, and implement effective teaching practices as set forth by the National Council of the
    Social Studies and in practice, aligned with the NC Social Studies Standards used in the field placement.
  2. Students will be able to plan for and implement instruction that recognizes students’ personal, cultural, and community assets and
    that uses appropriate techniques and materials to meet the needs of learners.
  3. Students will be able to understand and plan for reliable measures of student progress that assess students' conceptual
    understanding, procedural fluency, critical thinking, reasoning and problem solving. When applicable, design
    these measures and/or integrate measures into practice.
  4. Students will be able to recognize how literacy instruction is connected to comprehension (reading, writing, speaking and listening)
    and when applicable, integrate into practice.
  5. Students will be able to critically reflect on instructional decisions, adapting practice based on feedback, students' contributions,
    student data, and research.
  6. Students will be able to identify equity minded resources for social studies instruction and understand how to select and replace
    instructional resources towards a more equitable and accurate social studies curriculum.
