EDU4280 Methods of Teaching World Languages

This study of the content and organization of the foreign language curriculum in the public schools emphasizes methods and materials used in teaching at all levels (K-12) and covers how teaching the four basic skills and the target culture varies at each level. Students discuss theories of planning, instruction, choice of materials and evaluation, and gain practical experience by participating in a public school classroom.

  1. The successful student will:
    demonstrate familiarity with materials and resources for teaching foreign language at all levels K-12 including the
    World Readiness Standards for Teaching Foreign Languages.
  2. demonstrate knowledge of the foreign language curriculum of the public schools, in particular the North Carolina
    public schools, including the North Carolina World Language Essential Standards (WLES)
  3. demonstrate knowledge of the ACTFL/CAEP Program Standards for the Preparation of Foreign Language Teachers
  4. demonstrate understanding of the current philosophies and practices of the foreign language teaching
    profession.
  5. describe and demonstrate the best current methodologies of teaching a foreign language.
  6. demonstrate their ability to use technologies related to language teaching.
  7. include classroom management in their lesson plans.
  8. plan and teach a focused unit of study in a public school.
  9. meet the diverse needs of all learners including heritage learners.
  10. identify professional organizations related to the language teaching profession, and recognize the importance of
    continued professional growth and inquiry.
  11. practice completing a planning commentary for the edTPA.
