POL 3101 POLITICS AND EDUCATION

This course investigates the intersections of politics, policy, and education. While education is commonly understood to be a means of acquiring knowledge and skills essential for employment, and is just as often represented as a practice of self-discovery and a path to personal growth and fulfillment, political dimensions of teaching and learning are frequently overlooked. Who “gets” an education, where they are taught, what they are taught, and by whom significantly impacts the life of entire communities, from the organization of the economy and the distribution of power in society to the values and identities that predominate in a given place and time. Course assignments and readings engage with the history and structure of public education in the United States, national debates over education reform, the impact of inequality on educational access and outcomes, and questions about the capacity for educators to influence their students’ lives.
