POL 3680 Latin American Politics
In 1982, Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez said, “Latin America neither wants, nor has any reason, to be a pawn without a will of its own; nor is it merely wishful thinking that its quest for independence and originality should become a Western aspiration.” In this course, we’ll gain a deep understanding of those words and why they still hold true. We’ll do so by exploring the history of the region, its varied forms of political institutions, and its many political attitudes and challenges. This holistic approach will help facilitate discussions of current political events in the region as we come to realize why Latin America should and does matter.
