POL 3410 International Organizations
This course seeks to understand the historical origins of the postwar “international order” of intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), and how key (selected) multilateral institutions seek to address contemporary global governance challenges confronting states and societies around the world. In particular, the course will emphasize the United Nations (Security Council, General Assembly, and key functional agencies such as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees), the Bretton Woods institutions (International Monetary Fund and World Bank), and the World Trade Organization. Other IGOs such as the World Health Organization may also be included. An additional focus of the course is on political interactions among IGOs, transnational non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and local populations/civil societies.
