POL 3430 International Law
This course focuses on the interaction between international law and international politics. It introduces students to the nature, evolution, theories, and functioning of international law within the context of international relations, and specifically examines how law impacts politics and power and how politics and power impact law. Students learn the nuts and bolts of international law such as sources of law, the role of the state and other actors, international courts, treaty-making, and dispute resolution mechanisms. Then, students examine key areas of international law such as the use of force, law of armed conflict, human rights law, international criminal justice (e.g., war crimes, genocide), environmental law, and international trade law.
